How To Make Your Site More Appealing To Potential Candidates

Candidates

How do you attract candidates in a competitive market? You create a great first impression with your online presence. Even if a job seeker sees your listing on LinkedIn or learns about it from a friend, they will likely visit your company website to learn about your organization. Your site must be designed not just for new customers, but also for potential new team members.

Keep reading to learn what makes a site appealing and how to attract the best candidates.

CulverCareers goes Beyond Recruiting and basic hiring tips to provide expert advice to companies on how to attract, find, interview, hire, and retain top talent. That’s what makes us stand out from basic sales recruiters.

What Makes a Website Appealing to Potential Candidates?

In the digital age, website design is extremely important. No one wants to work at a place that looks shabby, scammy, or unprofessional, and that extends to a company’s website.

It must also be informative. They’re visiting your site to learn more about your organization and the positions that are available, the products and services you offer, your company’s values and mission, and what it would be like to be part of the team, so make sure that your website reflects what your organization is about.

How To Attract Candidates

A website is the public face of your organization. What it says and how it’s organized says a lot about the company, its team, and its mission. Both quality content and design are important to attract potential candidates.

A Clean Appearance

Your site should be attractive and easy to navigate. The design should be consistent, using colors and a typeface that are appropriate for your business and highly readable. Use high-quality company logos and professional images throughout the site.

Navigation should be clean and intuitive, and the site should be optimized for viewing on mobile devices, since many job seekers (and potential customers) will be on their phones researching your company.

Robust Company Information

A beautiful appearance is important, but it doesn’t matter if the site doesn’t offer valuable information for the reader. When assessing your site to ensure it will appeal to candidates, make sure it includes:

  • About Us page – This should be highly descriptive, providing a history of the business, what you do, and what your goals are.
  • Meet the Team page – Include detailed biographies with photographs and clearly state what each person’s role is.
  • Careers page – Make it easy for candidates to learn about open career opportunities, what the responsibilities and requirements are, and how they can apply.
  • Company Benefits – Discuss the compensation package you offer your team members, without including salaries. Is there paid vacation, healthcare, and maternity leave?
  • Company Culture – Do you have a vibrant company culture and a distinct personality? If so, show it off!
  • Special Perks – Mention what you offer your employees that sets you apart from the rest. Do you provide free lunches? An on-site gym? A hybrid work environment?

How do you design a good careers page? It starts with quality content. Clearly define job roles, showcase your office culture, and provide job alerts and regular updates. Tell candidates about your company’s values, what it’s like working for you, and why they should choose you instead of a competitor.

How NOT to Attract Candidates

Just as there are ways to make a website more attractive to job seekers, there are also things that you should not do.

Do not:

  • Stuff pages with spammy text and keywords.
  • Be vague about what your company does.
  • Leave negative customer reviews online.
  • Use content or images that some people may find offensive.
  • Embellish what your company does, its successes, and what you offer employees.

What can cause your site to look unprofessional? Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, rambling and unclear sentences, poorly organized web pages, confusing navigation, and a lack of valuable, detailed information are all things that can send potential job seekers and customers heading for the hills.
